What is the property jobs market like for graduates at the moment?

The past few years have been a difficult time for graduates seeking to enter the market. Since the Global Financial Crisis graduate intake has been severely restricted. The good news is that graduate entry into the profession has shown signs of improvement over the last twelve months and a number of large employers have active graduate programs for the next period. Competition remains tough; to stand a chance of joining your employer of choice strong grades are a must!

What are employers saying they want from graduates?

Almost all industry experts agree that the future for the property profession is buoyant. The profession has begun to adapt and modify what it has to offer to take account of the demands of a more sophisticated, modern customer. In each and every specialism you consider, real advances have been made.

The profession will continue to adapt and change and its next big challenge will be to infiltrate the boardrooms of the world to cement the critical importance of property in corporate activity and, ultimately, profitability.

How can a graduate make themselves stand out?

A carefully prepared and well-presented CV is the most important device you can use in a search for employment. If your CV is informative and interesting to read, it will open doors for you. The content of your own CV should be used by most recruitment consultancies without alteration. This will provide a more accurate and personal representation of the essential you!

What should graduates avoid?

Each CV should, ideally, be individually prepared for each specific application. I would also advise not to offer information about failed professional examinations; if you have had to take your examinations more than once, your CV should indicate only the date of passing without referral. If the subject is raised in your interview, of course you must be frank. But if you don’t raise it, the subject may not come up. Also don’t include anything that might create a negative impression. Your political or religious affiliations and participation in controversial activities or groups are best left out.

What salary should a graduate be aiming for?

A salary will reflect the position and responsibilities held and can differ between organisations. Graduates should take advantage of our industry-leading salary survey where they can gain an up-to-date insight into the Property markets. The results from our 2013 Salary survey shows that an Average salary for graduates can range from £19,000 - £23,000 depending on which specialism they enter.
