As an in-house team for a rural retail developer, this small and niche consultancy is breaking ground on at least 3 new projects in 2021. Whilst they also do 3rd party work for other clients, their primary client (and shareholder in their business), keeps them very busy. Working in the same office as the development team, they are an integral part of the feasibility and pre-contract planning and so the kind of QS they are looking for must have a business mind which can not only measure current costs, but predict future trends. Once deemed feasible, the QS Assigned to the project will run the procurement and tender process from start to finish, before making an appointment and moving into a 'Project QS' role. Managing claims, taking measurements, issuing payment certificates will all form part of your varied day. You will need to go to site regularly, in remote areas of the country, and so need to be comfortable with overnight travel at least once a fortnight. Taking projects all the way to final accounts, QS's in this environment do not have any sort of back office support, or juniors doing site work on your behalf. You are expected to run your own projects with little assistance and input, in a demanding environment which changes regularly.
Projects range from 10,000sm upward, and experience in running new build retail projects of at least this size is a must. Since there is no-one to assist you, you will need to have at least 5 years experience in retail QS work, coupled with a university degree in Quantity Surveying.
