Job Summary
An opportunity has arisen for a Senior Planning Enforcement Officer to join a proactive and well-regarded team within a local authority in Essex. This hybrid role offers the chance to work across a varied enforcement caseload, supporting the delivery of high-quality development management and playing a key role in maintaining planning standards across the borough.With a requirement to be on-site two days per week alongside regular site visits, this position provides a strong balance of office-based and fieldwork experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Investigate breaches of planning control through site inspections, gathering evidence, taking photographs, and seeking appropriate resolutions
- Prepare and serve Enforcement Notices and other legal documentation, ensuring accuracy and compliance with relevant legislation
- Work in accordance with statutory requirements including RIPA and PACE
- Support enforcement appeals and provide statements of evidence, working closely with legal services and representing the Council in court where required
- Monitor planning conditions and assist in ensuring compliance across approved developments
- Contribute to the processing of planning applications, including consultations, site visits, and negotiating amendments where necessary
- Respond to planning enquiries from applicants, developers, landowners, and elected Members with clear and professional written communication
- Sound knowledge of current planning legislation, policy, and enforcement procedures
- Experience within Development Management or Planning Enforcement, including exposure to appeals work such as hearings and inquiries
- A relevant planning qualification (degree or postgraduate)
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the confidence to engage effectively both on-site and in professional settings
- A proactive, organised approach with the ability to manage a varied workload independently
